************************************************************ ** ˙VOCABULARY LEARNING PROGRAM Version 4 ** ************************************************************ The unique program to ensure the best possible learning results ! =================================================================== VOC-45ES.EXE is Shareware Version 4.5 in ENGLISH VOK-45DS.EXE is Shareware Version 4.5 in GERMAN VOC-45ER.EXE is the REGISTERED Version 4.5 in ENGLISH VOK-45DR.EXE is the REGISTERED Version 4.5 in GERMAN **************** Only one program file is needed ****************** ********* You may rename it using the DOS command RENAME ********** I know, there are many vocabulary programs available, but this one is unique because it keeps a nine (!) level log of learning progress for each set of words˙and automatically adjusts testing algorism to ensure best learning results. There are no data files for learning included [except some data files for testing the abilities of the program] because typing in your own vocabulary is one important and very necessary step in learning -- ˙and without some hard work there is no permanent success ! All special characters supported by DOS can be entered allowing to create vocabularies in most languages. Default data files are named VOCABLE.DAT, but any other name for data files (*.DAT) is allowed [the German version uses "VOKABEL.DAT" for default]. You can switch between different vocabulary files. The size of your data files is only limited by your computer system but for acceptable speed each different˙data file should not exeed 500 pairs of vocables per data file - at least not on a PC type system. For each entry to the vocabulay two fields in each language are available with a maximum of 30 characters per field. For testing, both possible answers are checked and results remembered. The direction of testing can be set to one or the other language, or random selection can be chosen. Actually, the program is self-explanatory and fully menu driven; ˙many short-cuts for speeding up handling of the program are easy to detect when working with this vocabulary training and testing system. The program is in full color but no special graphic system is required. I runs in text mode and is not demanding on memory requirements (except on sorting large data files). For best performance, run it on the hard disk (diskettes are very slow). Maximum number of words allowed for an unlimited number of data files are 32,000 vocables, provided there is enough space on disk. Included in the program are many special features and utilities, e.g. to display a selected range of vocables, to sort the vocabulary, to change the learning status, to print the desired range of vocables, to see ASCII-Codes, to check the DOS-filenames, to switch between different data files, to turn sound and color on and off, etc. I sincerely hope that you find this learning tool helpful. Your suggestions for improvements are appreciated. Author's address: Prof. Dr.˙K. Th. Also, after a wrong answer, a hint is provided, giving also the length of the possible right answers, making learning more fun ! This feature can also be used to play word-guessing games. The maximal numbers of characters displayed as a hint can be chosen. By selecting "0" no hint is provided. NEW in version 3.1 : -------------------- The program system has been completely redesigned, the computer code optimised and some new features added. I hope you like the new outfit ! Naturally, the new version is fully compatible with the data files of earlier versions of and . NEW in version 3.2 : -------------------- The test menu has been improved and gives now information on the active data file and the range of selected vocables. Before starting to test the vocabulary, you have the option to switch to a different data file. It is now possible on demand to first test all chosen vocables just ONCE before further testing will continue based on wrong and right answers. Hints for the right answers after wrong answers are still available if the maximal number of characters to be shown of the right answers are chosen to be greater than zero (maximum is 9). Now, at the end of every testing session statistics on the results of testing are given out to the screen with many useful informations to check efficacy and progress of the learning process. NEW in VERSION 4.0 : -------------------- The new SORT ORDER after sorting of vocabulary lists can now be written back to file, in order to produce nicer lists of your vocables on the screen or when sent to printer. A new option allows to COPY any vocable in any data file to a new data file to create new lists of vocables without typing efforts. These list can also be sorted to your needs. At the same time, it is now possible to DELETE selected vocables in the original file. A few more improvements have been added. NEW in VERSION 4.3 : -------------------- Now, it is possible to output any listing to screen, printer or file. Back and forth scrolling trough all kinds of vocable and search lists is now possible. Two different listings and printing forms are provided, either with 2 or 4 vocable fields per set of vocables. Some menues have been changed. NEW in VERSION 4.5 : -------------------- When entering vocables, on demand there is automatic checking for already existing DOUBLES in the active data file. If the program finds the same vocable in one of the two main fields, you will get a warning about a possible double entry. You get a choice to SAVE the vocable, or NOT to save it, or QUIT asking and always save. IMPOTANT: Now, a utility "CONVERT.EXE" is included free of charge to transform vocable data files between ASCII files and the file format of . It is no longer necessary to enter your vocables, if you already have vocables available in one of 5 different ASCII formats: CONVERT will do the job for you! Last updated: January, 1993
